Jeez why would you spend so much money on textbooks unless you were forced? This isnt the HSC. Its 30 multiple choice final exams mostly lol.

If you buy a textbook for every subject in economics, you're probably looking at around $400-500 in textbooks each semester.

I didn't buy a single book for HSC. Apart from people on BOS, I really don't know many people who did.

With uni textbooks, you're right though, don't buy them unless it's absolutely necessary.

Is it really needed to buy every textbook?
NO! You dont even need to buy one, its a waste of money. Everything is available in the subject summaries which are like 10-20$, and honestly, I havent read through a single one of them :) so im not buying them again

I bought a textbook this session, because it was the only way I'd have easy access to the homework questions. Two weeks after I bought it, they put all the questions online. So pissed.

question, are Uni textbooks expensive?
Ummm... yes. Try around $100 per course, per semester.

Yes. Unishops will try and fuck you. Authors will release new copies of their book with minor edits every few years. Uni will assign books that you can only source through the unishop. AKA try and find them online when you can, or not buy them, or use the library.
Oh, but UNSW Bookshop sells their books at 10% off the RRP =P

Regardless, there are usually signs around and perhaps dedicated areas around the uni where one can source second hand books. Online is usually - in my experience - NOT the best bet. I looked up one of my Finance textbooks for Semester 2 and it was either $290 or some really stupid number near that, or $110 from the UNSW Bookshop.

Is it really needed to buy every textbook?
No, you don't have to get any at all. However, if you're like me - you may need reassurance. Now, in my experience - the Commerce subjects use them. Homework questions for Economics and Accounting were sourced directly from the textbook.

Homework questions for mathematics were given in online problem sets - and the textbook was there just as a 'reassurance'. I bought it anyway for that reason - and as an extra thing to look at if the course notes and lecture notes were vague (and there were times when that happened).

Note that some subjects don't have summaries.

It can also be more than 100, some are $130-$150 as well, like my accounting book, and $100 per subject not course...

I joined the co-op bookshop membership thing, so it's $20 price and then 9% off for life, so it's not bad, i made back the $20 plus an extra $3 in first sem with the discount, 2 books for 2 subjects cost me $240 something, and I didnt even use one of them AT ALL, so pissed at the fact they made us buy it, nothing in the book was in the exam  and now I need to sell it to someone :(

Accounting textbook was helpful tho
