and we'll be left with a void that the commercialists will rush in and occupy, making a killiin form us students.

did u know that the SRC and Union ensure that the uni's don't overcharge us for reader packs and lecture notes??

i'm sure u have joined some clubs and societies??? without the union these would not exist as no funding could be allocated. i'll miss the clubs and socs.

a union cannot exist if it is stripped of members. u can't run a union for the greater benefit of the students if only a small group of students support it. the union would downsize til it's power to represent the students is so small that it is no longer a force.
Aim: DO they make sure? And what about subsidies, as I explained in another thread.. I know very well that it's possible to sell can's for $1 a piece through an outsourced (SHOCK!) company. Why do drinks at uni cost more than $1?

Why should a society get more money than the ammount of money members are willing to pay to join that society?

It won't be "stripped of members", members will CHOOSE to leave, and hey, who knows, maybe if the uni started selling its self better rather than clinging onto the hope that the government will change its mind, they might get a few more members!!

Maybe I dont like drunken parties (subski etc) why should I fund it for you?

Just like why should you fund my membership of the USYD Liberal's or someone who joined more clubs then you?

Subski's parties are pretty much funded by ticket sales methinks, surely they can't spend more than $15 per head on setup costs when everyone buys their own drinks etc. But then again this is a student organisation, so you never know.

I know subski is funded mainly through sponsors and ticket sales but it was purely an example and it had a pretty good chance of him being part of it.

Hey! I even like to consider myself a male feminist, I believe in equal rights and i understand that there are some disadvantages that women have.
Do unions give out a 'budget'?
Like a fairly specific one..?

Cuz like, i guess they'd have to show what they spent money on to... SOMEONE?

in making VSU (it may be a good thing for some), not many people would pay the amount that they will asked due to the sheer amount (which will most likely increase in order to raise the funds needed to keep the union inoperation). this will lead to the loss of would be supporters.

on the topc of commercial outlets. have u noticed that they only have low prices when there is competition to force down the price. if no or little competition is present, prices would be higher than they are now.

xyama: would those socs exist if no fundin is available??? we are all free to join soc's for now, so it can be seen that u have chosen not to make use of the facilities available to u.

I'm anti-VSU.

However...the guy at my Psyc lecture on Tuesday morning annoyed the crap out of me with his t-shit: "FUCK OFF LIBERAL SCUM" (or something along those lines)

like fine...u have ur beliefs and I have mine. but how dare u parade around with a radical t-shirt like that telling liberal supporters (and myself) to fuck off. Who are u attacking? lib supports or the actual liberal party? Coz i've done nothing wrong so I don't think u have any right to tell me to fuck off.

ok, so i know that guy obviously doesn't frequent these boards. But i had to get it out.

/end rant.

all this debate was not really needed u realise, i just wanted to get details so anyone interested can attend.

but it has lead to this victimisation of ppl who have expressed their thoughts. this is a forum, we all have views

i am not tryin to say i am right, nor u r wrong, but merely express my opinion, which is my right.

You stated an opinion by calling the union a good thing, as a fact. It was therefore in my opinion asking me to state a counter argument so that others may get an informed view rather than just your opinion.

As it is our right to critique that opinion.

good point xyama, but if we don't all pay their will arise the issue of who pays???

whilst everyone pays is not the best solution, it is probably the most workable solution where the union does not lose, and the students as a whole don't lose.

it is the bigger picture that must be viewed. not the individual.

if we all only looked after oneself, wat has the community become???

Yes, 'informed', Xayma. Maybe if you weren't so dismissive we would all take more note of what you have to say (and you would not have to be so vehement). Try and calm down, if possible.

Well I'm assuming that aim54x would be able to back up his claims :) So you should get the extreme sides of both and it evens out. I know I should calm down, but it is the same argument over and over, the order in which topics is presented differs (the selfish bit didnt come up till just a post above yours) that and I spent half the day walking past anti VSUers.

A community of satisfied individuals?

AIM:
U claim that commercial companies would make prices higher for drinks at uni's... However, what the hell are u basing this on?

You can OUTSOURCE from companies, drink machines, they ask for a minimum price of $1, anything over is profit for the customer. So basically, the minimum price (that i know of) currently, for a can of coke from a coke machine SHOULD BE $1.
