*sigh*

Given the economic constraints of a typical university student you wouldn't want to waste your good money on a fucking Mac with less features for the same price.
where you get those prices from?

My sister has a Macbook and she complains about carrying it to Uni days on end cause 'it's so heavy'. I think it's like, 2kg or something?...less even? :uhoh:

Re: Laptop for Uni?

Personal choice, I type faster than I write and write messy hence its great for me. I also have all my notes at my disposal all the time. That said you don't need one and don't buy one just to be cool or anything

My laptop is 17" screen, not the brightest idea I've had. I'm going to be getting one of those tiny things that cost like $600 for lectures.

In 3 years I've honestly never seen a single person in a lecture with a laptop. But then, I go to a regional uni.

You don't need one.

Access to a computer/laptop/internet is advised, so you can have access to online resources. But not completely necessary.

Re: Laptop for Uni?

Honestly.. you dont need one.. universities have notes on their websites and you print them or write them down in a book.. but honestly those you have a laptop annoy everyone else in the lecture room because all you hear is clicking away!!.. and further more those who bring their laptops into the lecture rooms find themselves on the internet surfing irrelevant things because of the wirelesses that are available!!..

The only time I have taken my laptop to uni was the do some work on essays or to get information and have my work ready to fix but otherwise leave it at home. everyone does it and you will find after a few weeks into uni you will be the same. From all the books you may have to bring its really not neccessary!

just remembering the typing away annoy alot of peolple so sit away from them. its hard to hear the lecturer and clicking at the same time.

and hint.. its better to have lecture notes printed because then you can focus on what is being said by the lecturer rather then worrying if you forgot to write something down because they often say extra notes that are important and that arent written down!.

goodluck with everything!

Re: Laptop for Uni?

For those who prefer a laptop because they have shit handwriting needs to harden up. What are you going to do come exam time because call me old-fashioned but I believe exams are hand-written. If your handwriting is shit now and you use a laptop for all your lecture notes, guess what?...your handwriting will still be shit come exam time. Examiners are harsh, they usually have less than 2 weeks to mark a shitload of exams, in amongst other committments. If they can't read your handwriting, tough shit, no marks.

Lectures are a great time to develop and refine your handwriting!

Think about the workforce. Okay a lot of work is word processed but what about writing down quick notes to a secretary or details on the back of a business card? I wouldn't bother with the person/business if I received a short note that I couldn't read easily.

Uni is about developing professional skills, legible handwriting is one of those skills.

Many people in professional careers (business, engineering, science etc) will find themselves in a court of law for various situations. The importance of a diary/log/field book cannot be stressed enough here. Problem is that if the log is typed, it seems suspicious and usually a judge/jury will concur that it has been fudged. Perfectly neat handwriting in the same pen looks just as bad but a judge will prefer legible handwritten evidence which looks like it has been taken on the job.

Obviously I am referring to people who are too lazy to improve their handwriting. If you have a legitimate disability, that is another issue and their needs should be accounted for at uni and in the workforce. If you just are considering a laptop because using a notebook and coping with the occasional mishaped v is too much for you and you need onenote to cope, then uni is probably not the place for you. Kindergarten art might be more up your alley.

Those prices were wrong. Apple have updated the MacBook line, they don't offer the Black model or a combo drive. Plus they were USD, and with the horrible exchange rate it's just hard to compare.

Apple is a premium brand, HP is not - so the comparison doesn't work very well. Apples and oranges. Or, Apples and Lemons rather.

Not at all. (At least, this is the general consensus of discussions on this topic which have occurred many, many times before).

Re: Are Laptops rly nessesary for uni?

Absolutely not. There is no need for a laptop at all because everything you would use the laptop for (etc taking notes, drawing diagrams) can be done with a pen and paper. Hardly anyone uses laptops during lectures and tutorials. I would say that I've only seen 2 or 3 people use laptops in every lecture I've been to.

There are computers everywhere at uni, so there's really no need to need to carry a laptop around.

Re: Are Laptops rly nessesary for uni?

Answer; No

Fairytale's wright. People often take laptops to uni (as i've done lots) but not for lectures. Most unis (don't know about the one u might be going to) have electronic copys of their elctures anyway, so u can just print them out. Pen and paper is cheaper, doesn't run out of batteries (like my lappy has done a number of times) and doesn't weigh as much as lappy.

When people take lappy's to uni, generally, it's for assignments in the lib, or maybe in the food-court, or some common area, usually not lectures. There are always a few who do take them to lectures (i used to take one to arts lectures- but just cause my economics lectures had WAY too many formulas which takes ages to type up) and i can type way faster then write.

However, this said, in my 1st and 2nd year, i never did, and still passed with good marks, no issues. Pen and paper, much more efficient. So, while i know i've contracted myself a little, i'll quickly sum up. Yes you can, and people do, but mostly for assignments, not lectures, but, NO you don't need one. You don't even need to own a comp, they're everywhere around ANY campus, so just jump on one of them
