Not enough details known yet, as it is very recent and police haven't finished the interrogations and the crim hasn't been psychoanalysed. I'll update this thread if more information comes out.

In situations like this, I can only imagine the body's fight-or-flight instinct will take over. Most people will choose flight, as evidenced by a mother who allegedly threw her child forward as many rows as possible simply to get them out of danger. It's all well and good to say they should have done something, but place yourself in their shoes for a moment: an otherwise routine bus trip has been interrupted by what was described as a "blood-curdling scream" and you see a man carving another up with a "Rambo-like" knife. Panic, chaos and fear all set in. The body's natural response is self-preservation; for all you know, the killer filleting the other passenger would turn on you if you attacked. After all, it's a bus: it's narrow, it's cramped, and so there's only enough room for one person to do anything. And while you might have the advantage as you'd be standing over him, he's still got that knife.
