Melb vs Monash (1 Viewer)

So i am in yr12 makin final decsions bout uni

and i live very close to monash but 1.5 hours away for melb uni

but i really really really wanna go to melb uni cos it looks awesome

but idont know if i wanna travel that far.

also i like melb model cos it is more open
however monash is very close to my house

so what should i choose

I would say go to Monast since it's much more convenient. Education is what you make it. Both unis are highly reputable and Go8.

Also depends on what course you are studying? what are you doing?

Monash looks like some barren, outer suburban detention center, oh wait, it is a barren, outer suburban detention center.The Clayton campus should be brought to justice for its crimes against aesthetics and good taste.

From what I've heard from family and friends, melbourne is better for commerce and arts. Whereas Monash is better for engineering. Honestly, I wouldn't bother travelling that far to Melb Uni. Monash is really good, it's not second tier, it's just not as prestigious as Melbourne (old boys' club) but a very decent uni.

I would go to Monash in your case, no way will I travel for 1.5 hours when there's a perfectly decent uni close by.

well i want to do engineering. but i am not sure
so i was thinkin maybe start with a bachelor of science at melb then major at engineering

Hmm well from this year onwards, that is the only option at UoM, since they are dismissing the B Engineering system, to my great disgust (I'm the last intake). But yes, if you are not completely sure then BSci would be perfect as it can lead to so many different streams (e.g. Mathematical Physics).

I personally think that 1.5hrs of travel would be a greater hindrance to your education than going to Monash instead of UoM. As i said, both are very reputable universities, and are great in terms of job prospects.

If i was you i would look at Monash. Unless you really really have your heart set on UoM, such that not going there would mean demotivated attitude towards uni or something lol

Monash is still a 4 year bachelor course yeh?
Another consideration is that an eng degree at melbourne will now take you minimum of 5 years with 3 year science or environments (civil/environmental eng) and then 2 years masters.
All you need is like 65 academic average in 2nd and 3rd year and ur guaranteed a CSP masters spot for eng (at the moment)

If you want to do Engineering, there's no point going to Melbourne. Monash is just as good, if not better. I'd consider the travel if you wanted to work in research economics or something akin to that, but Monash is probably a better place to study engineering. Don't waste your time travelling.

-Last intake of B engineering this year, yes this doesn't relate to OP though.
-Melbourne's first year is also common (Eng Syst Design 1, Maths (diff levels), Science (elective) and Breadth (different i suppose).
-I think there last year (monash and Melb) are pretty similar. Doesn't really matter, i WILL be taking honours year.
-I think the last factor is the one that really determines why the Op should go to Monash.

but to the op, all of our opinions are made objectively, but it seems your heart is set on melbourne. if you think you would be happier if you got into melbourne there then id suggest going to melbourne

Hmmm, not many local students do masters right? Usually international students do masters (correct me if I'm wrong).

That may change in the future though. it'll probably be good to directly ask the uni.
I saw the info in an email sent to all the bachelor of environments students so yeh.

Surely it doesn't take that long to get into the city from clayton. Find a better travel route.

peak hour buses are pretty bad sometimes if they go on the main roads which are bumper to bumper. non-peak hour it usually takes 45 mins.

Also, the engineers didnt accommodate enough for the wind that will cause the menzies building to deflect. Apparently, in high wind, the top used to move as much as a couple of meters more than it should. Thats why that smaller building at the carpark side is there, to stabilise it as an after thought lol
