Breed 77 (metal with a tinge of spanish/flamenco :))
Heh, I promoted these guys when they did a tour with The Butterfly Effect back in February (2005?). Have a bunch of CD samples of La Ultima Hora & World's On Fire still laying around. ^^

I suggest:
Mouth Of The Architect - Absolutely brilliant Metal/Psychedelic/Ambient band from America. I recommend their song 'The Worm'.
Alchemist - Progressive metal band from Canberra.
D-Nine - Brisbane metal band.
Contrive - Metal band from Melbourne. Drummer hosts Triple J's Full Metal Racket.
Entombed - Swedish melodic death metal/thrash/hardcore band.
Isis - Either the Brisbane band, or American, they're both good, and metal.
Napalm Death - Grindcore/Death metal band from England.
Psycroptic - Death metal band from Hobart.

Hope you like some of these suggestions. ^^

You know it's wierd a few months ago i was listening to Chop Suey and i was like "SHIT THIS IS HEAVY" and then i started avoiding it-whilst listening to progressively harder rock. Then about a month ago i listened to Chop Suey again and it was just...so much softer than i remembered it to be. Metal's like a slide that's been coated with lubricant. Once you take that first step you'll be drawn further and further down into the deep dark pit...

Yeah, this thread is sick :D I seem to have a pretty similar music taste to the first poster.. 3 of your top bands are 3 of my top bands :D So anyway, heres my recomendation for metal:

In Flames
Children Of Bodom
Cradle Of Filth
Dimmu Borgir (similar to Cradle Of Filth kinda)
Dragonforce (power power power power metal :p i dislike the vocals though :()
Draconian (gothic metal)
Amon Amarth (!!!! These guys are the fucking bomb! It takes a few listens to fully get into them, so give them a good chance. i recommend you listen to Fate Of Norns, The Pursuit Of Vikings, The Dragons Flight Across The Waves. for a taste)

Those are bands that i full on LOVE, not just some good bands that i thought you'd enjoy.. So check them out :D Oh, and i dont think i saw anyone mention it, but instead of downloading songs by these artists, i'd check them out on myspace first. I think pretty much every band has a myspace these days, so that'd be the first place i'd go to check out new bands. Youtube is also good, but for that you have to wait for the video to load as well as the song, and there's less choice of songs for not as well known bands.

Nightwish are probably more gothic metal. At least that's what people I know call them.

I don't know if you'll like these, but hey, here are a few I'm into that haven't been mentioned yet...
Symphony X. The Edge of Forever is a good song by them.
Dream Theatre
Dave Martone - this guy incorporates just about every genre into his music. Some crazy composition going on with him.

You might get into Dragonforce for a while. They're great at first but most of their songs sound the same so chances are you'll get over them pretty quickly. Worth the listen though.

Also, you might like this stuff by one of my mates:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=63191
Check out Demon Ritual for one, but most tracks are pretty sweet.

And just for the hell of it, http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=298392&songID=2587659
It sounds a lot better metal, amirite?
Well, they're a bit more like power metal I'd say. Power metal with an orchestra behind it (really!).

How about DragonForce? That is if you like a lot of technical guitar shredding! (look at some vids on YouTube...it's crazy)

They are classed as Hardcore but thats bullshit. They both use metal vocals, heavy metal drumming and the riffs are as close to metal as you can get. Its no where near Hardcore. You want hardcore, you listen to At The Drive-in.
