From what I've heard Nightwish are symphonic power metal, but I hear people argue otherwise.

mastodon(mentioned), deeds of flesh(mentioned), gorgoroth(mentioned), behemoth, six feet under, lacuna coil, lividity

if you try all them that gives you a fairly broard spectrum of the metal world.

a slippery slope indeed. i am one for dark metal, a little death, and gore metal. but it al depends on tastes, and how heavy you go. once you meet up with bands like lividity, lucst of decay, deeds of flesh, cumgun, you are getting towards as heavy as it can go. however bands like nile, are just mind blowing. an upcoming death metal band well worth a look is behemoth, their latest cd demigod is fucking awesome.

These threads are hilarious because they nearly always end up as silly wank fests where people post as many metal bands as they can think of in an attempt to affirm their manhood.

1. If you like black metal, Satyricon are touring Australia in a couple of weeks. They are one of the founding fathers of the Norwegian black metal scene and have been active since 1992.

AU Adelaide - The HQ 1.12.2006
AU Melbourne - The Hi Fi Bar 2.12.2006
AU Sydney - The Metro Theatre 5.12.2006
AU Brisbane - The Arena 6.12.2006
2. The best advice I can give you is to sample stuff from different metal sub-genres to gain a better idea of the stuff which you like and don't like.

Nightwish are probably more gothic metal. At least that's what people I know call them.

I don't know if you'll like these, but hey, here are a few I'm into that haven't been mentioned yet...
Symphony X. The Edge of Forever is a good song by them.
Dream Theatre
Dave Martone - this guy incorporates just about every genre into his music. Some crazy composition going on with him.

You might get into Dragonforce for a while. They're great at first but most of their songs sound the same so chances are you'll get over them pretty quickly. Worth the listen though.

Also, you might like this stuff by one of my mates:

Check out Demon Ritual for one, but most tracks are pretty sweet.

And just for the hell of it, http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=298392&songID=2587659
It sounds a lot better metal, amirite?
G'day stranger

*Dream Theater

Symphony X ftw.

Edguy (awesome European Power Metal),
Avantasia The Metal Opera (nothing like Nightwish...more like edguy and Helloween),
Nightwish (More goth than metal though)
Sonata Arctica
Dragon Force
Helloween
Metallica
Apocalyptica (weird, but awesome. They play Metallica type stuff on electric cellos. Sounds nerdy and weird, but is really cool)

appologies if these have already been suggested.
