Hopefully they won't try to go out with a blaze of glory (ie. kill millions)

India and Pakistan balance each other out because they basically neutralise the ability of the opposing army to conduct large-scale military operations outside South Asia. I remember they nearly went to war over a shooting in the Indian parliament a few years ago but didn't due to the Pakistani nuke.

Obviously this is what the British had in mind when they divided the country before they left, they divided it into religious lines in order for them to cancel each other out and so they couldn't operate as a military power on the larger world stage.

I wonder why we're talking about India-China War here, cuz I'm sure that won't happen any time soon. We wouldn't be talking about the navies though, because both are not blue-water navies.
It is going a bit offtopic but India is gradually trying to project it's power strategically. They already have a base in Tajikistan and there should be more bases in central asia, africa and asia in the years to come. India and china both want blue water navies. India would be a blue water navy soon with the induction of IAC and refurbishment of Admiral gorshkov ac carrier. Especially for china they really need a blue water navy, coz right now india or usa can easily choke the oil supplies to china is they wanted to in the indian ocean. Long term advantage for india is that India would get the latest weapons from USA and Russia while USA would never sell it to china as it sees china as a threat and russia doesnt sell the latest tech to china comparatively to india coz they still dont trust them completely. Though i would really like if China and India remain at peace and I think they would remain that way. Quite frankly India cant do anything to stop china from reaching its global ambition and china cant to do the same to india. They both know it quite well:).

They have a base in Tajikistan? What for? Thought that was Russia's sphere of interest.

I don't think India would ever try to choke off China (and East Asia's) oil supplies while they're at peace at any rate, China and India are getting along pretty well at the momment so I don't think there's going to be any problems there.

The problem with oil in East Asia is that most has to pass through the Straits of Malacca and with the pirate problems and jihadists in the area, that's why East Asia's been competing with each other for Siberia's oil pipelines.

No country is ever going to benefit from war in this modern age, so hopefully Asian nations can keep staying on track and we can keep growing economically. Going back on track, the NK nuke definately does not mean a war will occur, it just changes the Status Quo in East Asia away from China.

"North Korea should understand how strongly the United States and many other council members feel that they should not test this nuclear device," Bolton said. "And that if they do test it, it would be a very different world the day after the test ... because there would be another nuclear power."

Japan hinted the North could face sanctions or possible military action.

Oshima indicated that the North could face sanctions or possible military action under Chapter 7 of the U.N.
This was a few days before.

To the people who think NK can be easily defeated, I think you're forgetting the little detail about NK's 1.2million man army and stockpiles of Chemical Weapons that (to East Asians anyway) are as much as a threat as nuclear weapons.

This is the main reason, SK's not really shaken by this test, any attack by NK on SK whether it be conventional, chemical, nuclear = worst case scenario. The real losers in this event are China and the US. And yeah, I think Russia has too many problems in Chechnya and the like.
Manpower means jackshit.

The USA loses when ONE nuclear attack happens on their territory.

Now that the NK has nuclear weapons, they can basically bribe the US for (what could be) unlimited concessions. If they don't, the NK can sell it onto terrorists and the like. Also, the NK would be free to engage in low-scale military operations in East Asia without being fearful of foreign invasion because of its nuclear capability.
hahahahahha wtf, nk doesn't have the long-range missiles to reach mainland usgay.

This is why the terrorist link was implied.

As for the missiles that can reach the US, it's only a matter of time really.

Re: N Korea conducts Nuclear test

Central Asia is going to play a very important role strategically because of its natural resources and close proximity to both asia and europe. Aircrafts from the base in Tajikistan can reach pakistan in matter of minutes which helps india strategically. India also wants more influence in the region.

ofcourse India would never choke or even think of doing that unless china attacks india and there is a war.

As I said, didn't know India had interests in Central Asia.

Central Asia's a very important area now, Russia, China and the US has been in competition for that area for a while, well now India's involved... well that's...

(from your tone in this thread)

Korea will be crushed, no matter what.
No I don't dear. :)

And as for NK being crushed when attacked by bigger powers? Yes. But at the cost of possibly millions of lives. Therefore, such an action will not occur in any forseeable future.

The issue here is not conflict in NK itself as that would be highly unlikely to occur. No-one has anything to gain by invading NK nor is NK intent on using its nuclear arsenal.

I don't know why people here are quoting Japan's constitution. It's a fairly logical step for Japan to take - that is to take advantage of the situation and do what they are already capable of doing. This will of course depend on the US's blessing which is a bigger question than most suspect.

Australia going nuclear would certainly be in our interest and quite physically possible considering our uranium deposits and technological level, having the effect of thowning off the shackles of US sheriffhood. However, the US would definately not allow us to acquire nuclear weapons as it increases our bargaining power when it comes to foreign relations given that we'd no longer be looking to the US for protection. This is obviously not in their interests.

Like, I'm not being racist here...but I doubt the chinese government would care that much if they had millions of casualties...they could probably use abit of thinning out of the billion and a half in there.

So, I don't think your postulate holds.

True about Japan. Shinzo Abe's been looking to 'reform' that constitution for a while now. If NK has the nuke, the LOGICAL step is for Japan, SK and Taiwan to also get nukes. Having said that, these governments might choose to instead bow to American pressure and not act on their national interests which would weaken their position in East Asia.

Fact is, status quo's been changed. To re-align it, Japan and SK will need to develop nukes. Then, China will lose its previous status as the sole nuclear power in East Asia and its influence in East Asia will fall rapidly.

that is the advantage socialist dictatorships hold. their decisions are not bound by these irrelevant civilian concerns about humanity.
