I think we do need to raise teachers' pay. Just because there are a handful of crap teachers (trust me, I've had experience with these teachers in my younger years), that doesn't mean that all teachers are like that.
At the same time, the only way *real* change is going to happen is if we also appreciate our teachers and change our attitudes toward them. I know that a lot of people think that teaching is an 'easy profession', but having applied for teaching for next year, I realised that now there are so many hoops that have to be jumped through. Not to mention that the teacher shortages that have really messed up the system. I read an article (don't remember which one) where the teachers talked about having to teach outside their specialisation because so many actually gave up during the pandemic.
Also teaching is scary. If you bleep up, then you could potentially ruin a kid's future as well. And job security is really poor - many schools only offer temporary/casual spots that last a year - if the teacher can handle kids who have severe disrespect problems. I am really grateful that I've had teachers who have stuck through the pandemic in spite of the issues they had, and the extended stay of year 12.
I don't know but that's my two cents about it.

Teachers have the lowest workload out of all the jobs Idk what they are complaining about (if their workload was very high they wouldn't be tutoring outside of school). 3 months vacations i think they also get vacations in school time too. The only teacher's I have seen that actually have a good attitude towards their jobs are math teachers.

Okay time for a little knowledge sharing here. What Anaya bought up is actually what we call nowadays an ‘Out of field teacher.’ These ones for the students are the worst and can be called the square pegs in round holes. But from a teacher’s standpoint this is just do what you gotta do moment.

3 months vacations are you joking. Is that from your own eyes. Plus how much of the teacher’s job do you actually see. Such inaccurate reporting.

They have trained for in-person teaching, not "virtual teaching". Not everyone has stable internet or depending on the area, would need to do i) in-person, ii) online whilst also iii) preparing hard copy versions so that their student without technology devices/internet could access the resources. This is often harder when students have parents whose first language is not English, so do not have access to the support needed.

The skill sets are significantly different, and some were expected to do "in-person" whilst also "delivering online content" at the same time.

Additionally, video fatigue is a real thing, it is a lot more exhausting to do an 8-hour training session with video conferencing than it is delivering it in person.

yea I feel like firstly high school teachers should be payed a lot more. Since they have to specialise in a field eg. Chemistry. Where as primary school teachers learn more so to specialise in helping children learn.

But yea the problem is bad teachers, my chem teacher never taught us anything and it’s take a huge toll on my chemistry study. Science teachers should be payed the most but they should also make the route to becoming one more similar to medicine. That way not any person who has no idea what science is could become a science teacher.

They’re already doing that by making it compulsory to do master of teaching in your science course for teaching. And they’ve introduced an exam similar to the UCAT for science teachers getting scholarships, followed by a interview just like in medicine .
I had to do Abstract reasoning, verbal reasoning, emotional intelligence etc..

All of this would mean that future science teachers would be more competent and deserving of a high pay.

One study showed that 70% of top achieving science students considered a career in teaching but rejected it due to a lack of pay for the work put in. Many students who excel in academics also enjoy tutoring.

If the pay was increased more people would want to become science teachers. Hence you could implement the teaching “UCAT” and the “UCAT interview” to not just scholarships but becoming a science teacher. Combining this with the compulsory master of teaching course for science, would mean that much better teachers would be produced.

Also I think for a system of profession for their pay, a test would be conducted in which an examiner sits in your classroom and assesses your teaching. So science teachers who just write the textbook on a whiteboard and do nothing else can be spotted.


Scienc Teachers should also sit exams every 4 years or so, to make sure their knowledge in their chosen science field is up to scratch

Yes, so true. My history teacher is also a teacher for one of the primary school grades (since my school was K-12) and so he usually got 4 hours of sleep on weekdays during the pandemic. After slogging through marking work and sending catch-up emails to students (and parents at times), he'd also make sure he went out of his way to make lessons engaging even though we were at home.

Tutoring doesn't just exist to 'teach' students. It is also to help kids who might need specialised help. If teachers became tutors, then they wouldn't be able to address everyone's needs. Remember, the way I learn would be different to the way that you learn, and our needs would be different (e.g. you might be struggling with integration, whereas I might be struggling with statistics)
Also, in the 3 months holiday, you do realise that teachers most likely are using that time to do lesson scaffolding for how the work is throughout the year? Many of them have phantom holidays because they spend the entire time working out when to have this, how to catch up this point, when the exams/assessments have to be written up by, etc.

Ouch. By the looks of it, I think it is public school teachers, but I could be wrong. I think get in touch with the school and ask the teachers themselves. They will have a better idea of what's happening

That vacation isn’t real vacation at all. Teacher constantly have to plan lessons, mark grades,prepare reports,other paper work during their free time and holidays.

Don’t forget Professional Development or PD quite essential to upgrading a teacher’s arsenal of teaching strategies.

Yes there are those type of teachers and they are not a good representation of the teaching profession.
