I've finally caved. I need to start reading if I want to stand a chance in doing well in english. What suggestions do you guys have for books that aren't super long and have some action (no romantic like stuff)?

Not sure if this will help you for English but Harry Potter is really good, easy read fun etc.

Reading isn't 'necessary' to succeed in English. I'd highly recommend to read - nothing wrong with it, but this is such a silly myth.

If you want to expand your vocab, read. If you want to write fluently, you listen.

Although, for new modules that require you to write creatively / discursively / persuasively, reading good books can inspire. I'd recommend 'The Republic' by Plato. Fucking hefty, dense read but very very good.

The last book I properly read was Percy Jackson in like year 8 and it was pretty good, had decent action

u dont need to actively read outside of school to stand a chance of doing well in english.
though i did read somewhat back in the day, so that might be somewhat useful.

if your grammar and sentence fluidity is bad, there's other ways to improve, but reading should help.
reading is encouraged for Module C, however, HSC English is very different to what you see in books. You don't have words to construct sophisticated plots etc.
What you need to learn to do is to make something in 800 words that sounds good and hits boxes, i.e. you write about some dude literally doing nothing but internal monologue or expanding on about one action for like 200 words to give it depth lol.
Minimal plot = more marks most of the time lol.
Even better, HSC Mod C encourages someone to write the same thing over and over again with different stimulus's to get the highest mark. because this is how you really start creating realistic, good stuff. and really, you don't need more than one 'thing' because you only write one in any exam/assignment in externals and internals lol.
Same characters, same settings, same emotions, same everything, being written over and over, changed only for the stimulus seems like the way to go lol.

Ah right, that was the main goal: to get better at my creative writing, seeing as I'm currently in the Reading to Write common module. My teacher suggested to me that reading widely may help me find a style of writing that I both enjoy and will be able to write well with. Do you have any more like less dense stuff lmao

Let me have a think about it. Although, I do really suggest books that are a bit content heavy/philosophical. A book like the Republic is 'easier' to read than most dense books, just because it's a conversational type book (two philosophers going at each-others throats).

So, when I did the reading to write module last year, I read, "The Great Gatsby". I wouldn't necessarily say its a book you can really adapt your writing style to. However, no matter what text you decide to read, always look out for:
The MAIN narrative conventions used:
1. Style
2. Point of view
3. Genre
4. Language features (similes, metaphors, symbolism etc.)
This should help you with adapting these stylistic features into your own writing. Hope this helps!

If you are looking for creative inspiration maybe short stories are the way to go, I recommend 'The machine stops' a geninuely helpful story (really creative) that helped me.

Some of the best English students I know (state rankers incl.), drew their inspiration from random articles from ABC, opinion pieces or blogs.
