The point is that educated decisions are certainly NOT being made by ~18yos. We're talking about fucking pampered brats; what else is there but condescension? If the worst effect of this is that young people will seek pleasure and entertainment from means other than escapism and self-degredation, then bring it on.

Re: Apparently raising the drinking age to 21 is on the cards

I think schroedinger said it best when he said you can't legislate morality. You really can't, not without being a condescending fuckwit. I would also argue that imposing a law on moral grounds (regardless of whether they'll frame it as a "health and safety" issue or not) is...well, if it isn't illegal it should be. Someone else's moral high-horse is not justification for a law to be made.

If someone can provide logical reasons why raising the drinking age would solve social problems and benefit the majority of the population I'd love to hear it. So far all I have seen is people using the "organ development" argument which is not really enough.

THE Federal Government would consider raising the legal drinking age and increasing alcohol taxes if there was a community push for such measures.

LOL I often heard people calling americans stupid because they dont allow drinking until the age of 21. Looks like they were smarter after all.

As a director of a student union I must comment that a large percentage of our income comes from late night parties and drinks sales, and that given the average student does a 3 year degree, most will have left or be close to leaving by the age of 21.

Why does Kevin Rudd hate student unions?

Does anyone think lowering the drinking age to 16 and no limit if accompanied by a parent/guardian (including at licensed venues) would do more to help?
Nah. It wouldn't make any discernable difference in terms of reducing binge drinking, I would think.

Which is the whole point of this argument btw. Raising/lowering the age, whatever you do, isn't going to do a thing.

The kind of change the government wants to see is going to need MASSIVE social change before it'll happen. I.e. People need to THINK underage drinking is bad (and by people I mean, like, everyone) before an age change would have an effect. An age change in this circumstance would be redundant anyway seeing as how the change in teen drinking habits would have come from a shift in community attitudes and not the rule of law.

Underage drinking is going to happen, because people experiment. If you push the age of experimentation back to 21 they're going to do it while they're in the workforce, rather than when they're in university, TAFE or doing their apprenticeships. This does not help the situation.

Schroedinger said:
To answer that openly, then we must raise the age limits for all manner of things if we are to take away alcohol. But we can never deal with the fact that if people want something they are going to get it, which means we can't turn back the clock on booze. Which means the only way we could turn back the clock on booze (like we did with racism) is make drinking underage unacceptable [like drink driving] just a total social faux pas to drink underage and then boom we all live in the land of milk and honey with sweet fish pie being fed to us by tubes from God above.
I dont have any stats, but I would assume that a great bulk of the booze would come from well-guarded night-clubs. My guess is that this is what the measures are aimed at. I would also assume that most under-age kids get their booze from 18-21yos, so this would stab at that too.

But we're not fucking slavs! We dont toll the field all day under slabs of snow, government whips and fascist tanks. It's not the ONLY essential joy in our lives. Surely we're more complex than ignorant peons.

So we should also raise the age of voting too? If you can't drink then you sure as fuck shouldn't be classed as being able to make an educated decision in terms of voting.

The age limit doesn't matter and I totally agree with Cosmic Doris on this:

It's the Australian drinking culture that is to blame. Stop putting bandaids on the problem.

I've always thought that voting should be contingent on something other than age - like passing the HSC (as opposed to passing vomit and blood and out due to mindless quaffing of liquor)

The cost for a liquor license is expensive enough as it is in Sydney, and doesn't the 18-21 demographic comprise a large amount of most venues' turnover? (not sure on this...i have no sauce)

+1 (this is almost as stupid as "you should stay in school until you get your licence so you can drive to work")

Smart cookie.

I don't remember who it was, but one of you... Wait. I think it was Smithereens? said that the ALP hasn't been left-wing since the days of Whitlam. So for liberals, you're making contradicting accusations :)

Health Minister Nicola Roxon said raising the drinking age and hiking alcohol taxes were not priorities, but did not rule out either measure.
"If the communities do raise ideas like this that should be considered, we're happy to consider them but they're not part of our first tranche of priorities that we'll be focused on," she said.
Ms Roxon said the government was seeking to address binge drinking by changing community attitudes as well as laws.

What if they change the age to 21? Will all those who are already 18-21 just simply have to stop drinking and stuff.

I think it's quite rubbish.

If they are going to change it they better make it after 8th November 2011 or I'll be super annoyed.

Kevin Rudd has probably been drunk about twice in his life and one of those times was probably from communion wine or some shit.

Therefore he knows jack all about the effects of alcohol: medical, social, psychological or otherwise. Besides what he reads and what other people tell him.

Therefore his opinion on this subject is worth nothing. Anyone with a healthy experience of alcohol related activities behind them knows this a bad idea. It's never going to happen though, I strongly believe that, at least. So yeah drink up guys

By the way I was drinking as I typed this so disregard any retarded statements within it k
