What I'm trying to say is that 59/120 -> 83 aligned is completely fine, considering the difficulty of the course. However, on top of the 83, if you apply scaling, it becomes overkill. To put it into perspective, getting a 83 (59/120) in 4u maths is equal to getting a 92 in chemistry in terms of aggregates
Scaling is done to suit the needs of UAC to determine a person's ATAR.

To remove one would be to remove the needs of others. To remove scaling would cripple (literally) UAC's ability to compile effective aggregate scores in order to determine someone's rank in the state. Removing aligning would leave students who do not opt for an ATAR out of the loop entirely, which is unfair.

Scaling is based off of how well students in the whole state cohort in that one subject do compared to others (I'm pretty sure it's just English). That's why you have Aboriginal Studies' students getting scaled down (unless they're in the top ranks of the state) because 95% of them can't read. MX2 students are, more often than not, very intelligent and can do well in their other subjects.

MX2 scales the highest out of any HSC subject. With the exception of the one-off language every few years. (Classical Hebrew or some bs was higher a few years back because there were like 15 kids in it across the state)

Wow aligning makes your marks look better. Plus uac scales the aligned marks. Big wow to subs that align and scale well

Whooooa. You're atar is 95+ with only one band 6?
I'm legit very hopeful right now.
I have known students to get ATARs of 95ish with no Band 6 (or E4s) but lots of high 5s - one got 88 or 89 for everything which saw him get a higher ATAR than another student with 4 Band 6s - but his were in Maths/Sciences while the one with the Band 6s were in Visual Arts, Drama, General Maths and Bio so...
