    Career advice

Maybe you can talk to your manager and take on some of the duties of an assistant manager as a trial? It will give you the chance to see if the work-study-life balance will be thrown out of whack if you did end up committing.

    Does uni get less overwhelming

It does take some people a few weeks to orientate themselves but it's very easy to get used to the expectations imo. My advice is to remember that university is more about self-directed learning. You have your lecture, and then you are expected to read further into the area. The...

    Reading Lecture Slides before Lecture

It really depends on the area of study to be honest. There are naturally areas which are more conducive to self-directed learning than others (I'd argue that this is primarily applicable to the Arts and Commerce areas) so I can understand if you haven't been able to do the same.

    Reading Lecture Slides before Lecture

Highly recommended. Even better if you do readings based on the content, prior to the lecture itself. The best notes consider what is not written in the slides, rather than what is written in the slides.

    Semester 1 USYD Chatter Thread

The summer is over, O-Week is being washed away by the rain, and classes are starting on the flip side, so it's about time we got this chatter thread started up again. Welcome back to our current students and those who will be commencing their studies at USYD for the first time. Just a word...

Is getting an MX 5 a good idea for first car.

Are you serious? I was looking at 2005-09 models a few months ago and the cheapest I could find was $18k.

    Commerce/Science majors

Mathematics and Statistics are usually at the top of the list. Some of the more environmentally-geared majors could work well too if you are interested in consulting. These could include Geography, Earth Science, Chemistry, etc.

    Driving to Uni

Your best bet would be to go through Victoria Rd via Ryde and then through Annandale/Forest Lodge. Takes about 40 minutes but you can get under 30 minutes if you have a good run.

First Day of Uni - Your Experience

I know that some universities have gone back this week, so I think it would be nice to start a thread for all the newbies to discuss their first day of uni. How has your first day met your expectations (or not)?

Not sure if my computer lab is on or not

Well your timetable says it starts on 2nd March. It checks out.

Do I need a laptop for uni?

I agree with this. Laptops are only useful if you are under the pump, and don't have much time to do your assignments at home.
