How should I study in year 12?

I think just reflect on your study methods from year 11 - keep what worked, try and think of how to improve what didn't work. For me I finally did good at the end of year 11 english with a new writing technique I tried and memorising essays but that didn't work at the start of year 12, I was...

    Studying in the Morning=99.95

Yeah I heard teens/young adults are programmed to wake up around 9 or 10 AM, but I believe studying right after waking up is definitely the best, when you're freshly awake and your brain isn't distracted or tilted from anything... in saying this I prefer studying at night because I did nothing...

Marking in Public vs Private Schools

Yeah I think I remember being 6th for english at the end but they scaled me up to be tied with 5th because my trials marks were really good compared to my start of the year marks, so I guess the teachers (sometimes) have good intentions when they change the marks.

one week until prelims! advice please <3

Imo just get some good notes online and memorise them well, and do past papers if you have spare time. To me knowing the content in depth is more important than past papers in terms of what to do if you have no time. Imagine you do 5 past papers but don't study the content, then the exam you get...

    Writing Speed

Just writing more should help, and knowing the content better so you don’t pause much to think of what to write. I personally wrote around 800 words in 40 mins I think for my HSC essays because my pen grip is really weird and I write really hard!

    Probability Question

    P(at most 2 heads) = P(0 heads) + P(1 head) + P(2 heads) = P(3 tails) + P(2 tails) + P(1 tail) = 36/100 + 29/100 + 20/100 = 17/20 (not an option) But I think the question has a typo because it says "counting the number of heads" is the experiment and the table has "number of tails". I think...

Marking in Public vs Private Schools

The actual marks don't matter as blyatman said, it's just the rank and the gap between each rank. Some schools may edit marks to make the ranks closer I think.

QUESTION TO ALL 2020 HSC STUDENTS

Ahh yea I can't really remember since it was a few years ago. I just remember not even applying because my UMAT was really bad, like in the 50s LOL rip

    MQ Chatter Thread

Kinda late but I didn't study anywhere near enough for the subjects, just had no self discipline due to every library being closed. Didn't fail any thankfully, but wish I did better. But yea that's in the past haha

QUESTION TO ALL 2020 HSC STUDENTS

Yea for sure, no harm in applying, just chuck it up first on your UAC and if you don't get an offer you'll get your next course in preference anyway ^^ and who knows you might surprise yourself and surpass your ATAR goals :D

QUESTION TO ALL 2020 HSC STUDENTS

I don't wanna be negative but the 93.5 is just "to be considered", to be competitive I think it's either 98+ or 99+ but I'm not 100% sure since I researched this a few years ago. Also if I recall correctly they weigh it equally with interview and UCAT.

Sitting trials rn but regretting all my subject choices and I want to study a completely different field in uni.

There's really no prerequisites for uni courses, I think besides USYD which might need 2u maths. The content for maths in uni might just be hard but you can work harder and study some maths in the holidays maybe.

    memorising

It depends on how much time you have. If you have barely any time I'd just learn all the dot points that I don't know at all, and then have a general understanding of each dot point. If I had a decent amount of time I'd just memorise all dot points properly. I like acronyms as a way to memorise...

    Recommended biology textbooks

I used biology in focus, concise and simple - but I always recommend learning content in depth so use other sources as well when you go in depth later on.

    Handwriting speed

I think I wrote around 700ish words for each english essay, got 91 in advanced. Not that the length of my essays was the problem, my analysis and vocabulary was just basic compared to people who got high 90s (where their sentences/languages sounded really nice).

    How to study for English?

Yeah for english everyone has a different style, some people memorise quotes and some people memorise their whole essays, plus different ways to memorise these as well. I had a google doc with my quotes, around 3 quotes for each theme (2 themes per text or something, I forgot the structure...

Have I messed up my chance for success already?

I think they'll see you failed one sem then they'll see a gigantic improvement, which is a great thing. Having fails then continuing to fail is definitely a bad sign though. Improvement is a good sign it shows you put in the effort and picked yourself back up!

    can i get >90?

Yeah try and boost the modern and maths ranks, MX1 and SOR seems like they won't count... but anyway just try ur best to get 90+, no point stressing about estimates since you can always perform really well in the final exams.

    can i get >90?

    School rank?

How many past papers is enough to do before trials?

In my opinion knowing the content in depth is equally as important, if not more important, than past papers. At least knowing the content inside out means you can attempt every question with good exam technique/knowledge. But anyway, of course a mix of both is the best. Also, the quality of each...
