I agree with Hermes1 and slyhunter, in 3u most of the time you can rock up and do well if you do 4u, since the difficulty of 3u is pretty insignificant compared to 4u.

lol our school forces us to do advanced english - they don't even offer standard. pretty sure it's like this for quite a few selective schools and other high ranked schools. i think.

yeah, this. give away everything to all your friends that you think will help them, the very fact that they might beat you in externals may save you from getting a shitty external mark. there's no reason why you shouldn't give everyone in your cohort as much as you can. giving your notes away...

I do 10 units, as do ohexploitable, destinyliang, and a number of other people on this forum. it's a risk you decide to take, but it's a pretty uncommon situation.
