    Illness/Misadventure

Please note that if you are applying for all exams you may get it for some and not others as they give you what it BEST for you and it is possible that in some cases you will get a better mark with your exam and others without it.

Receiving raw marks in HSC results?

Schools are given the same thing you are: aligned exam mark, moderated assessment mark and final HSC marks. Schools are not given the raw marks. They aren't given your ATAR's either.

Using different coloured pens in discovery creative writing for impact?

Don't know about in English but as a way to make an emphasis with colour being less an option I don't see why it would be a problem (I am a History teacher not English by the way and tell my students to underline their use of the required sources - as much for their own benefit as the markers...

Using different coloured pens in discovery creative writing for impact?

They scan in blue and white - which is why they recommend a black pen as it scans darker than even a blue pen when it comes out in blue (and having struggled with a number of blue pen scans over the last two years it is noticeable when the different coloured pen comes up).

What happens if i cant sit an exam

As much as possible you are advised to sit the exam, even if you are filling in an 'illness, misadventure' form. This is because even though you may think you are too ill you may still do better than an estimated mark would get you (I have had a student literally throwing up throughout the exam...

Can I pick up Drama in Year 12

You haven't done the Preliminary course which is a prerequisite for an HSC course.

What count as Secondary Evidence for HSC Ancient History

Brian is a well-respected historian and university lecturer who happens to write some textbooks for Ancient History. The others are basically high school teachers of history. That is the difference. Using Brian is fine but I agree with your teacher - don't refer to the others at all by name.

    Writer's cramp/handwriting issues

Go to a doctor and get it checked. Have a physical rest from studying - try reading the notes for a day or two to let your hand rest - try writing with the other hand for a day or so - will be slower but as you are the only person who will be reading it and if writing helps you learn it will...

    question about getting dragged down

He can still drop it. I had a student drop the subject on the Monday when the exam was on Thursday. If he keeps it and doesn't do the exam he will be removed from the cohort and record a zero mark for that exam on his transcript. Don't worry about him.

What do all these marks mean? weighted/unweighted/aligned?

    1. literally the raw mark you earned on the exam - the sort of mark you are used to getting at school when everyone in the class does the same questions. 2. the adjusted mark between questions so that al questions on the paper have the same statistics e.g. in Modern History when looking at the...

    Personality section

Part A can be anything from a basic question on 'rise to prominence' as an example to an outline of their complete life. You would be expected to write 2 - 3 pages for full marks (of the exam booklets). Part B will be evaluative and may include a quote that you have to use as well as an...

What will happen if i don't go to a HSC exam?

If you are still enrolled in the course and don't turn up without a satisfactory excuse then it will be recorded on your transcript as a 0 for the subject. It will have no impact on the other students in the cohort as you will be removed from the aligning and moderating process. You can still...

    Personality section

Having marked the personality question for about 10 years - a description can get you full marks for Part A but please READ the question and answer what it asks e.g. if it says THREE SIGNIFICANT EVENTS then describe three events and don't go giving their life story. The biggest mistake people...

Studying Preliminary content during the HSC year

Nothing from Modern is examinable in the HSC in most cases but if it is e.g. Ho Chi Minh as a personality overlaps the Preliminary topic of Decolonisation in Indo-China and the HSC topic of Conflict in Indo-China but I would expect your teacher to go back through the relevant part of his life in...

Possible to get a band 1?

All subjects have a Band 2 cut-off and if your raw mark is below that cut-off then you get a Band 1. It is determined by the same committee that determines the cut-offs for the other Bands. In fact, in my experience, we spent most time discussing the Band 5/6 cut-off followed by the Band 1/2...

Morale is low 11 days left until HSC help :(

You are stressing, which is NOT unusual at this point in time. Take a few deep breaths and go out for a few hours and do something you enjoy - outside in the sun if possible, kick a ball, ride a bike something to take you away from your studies. Then come back and you will feel refreshed and...

ranked last in extension subject but can get an E3?

Yes. I have sent in students with lower marks than that who have ended up with E3s.

    Wrong subject rank?

Marks have been submitted to BOSTES but ... after all HSC exams are completed you have about a week to check the ranks that BOSTES has for you. That is when you are able to query the ranks with the school and if necessary get it checked.
