    What to major in! Accounting/Finance

Glad to help - I have been here a bit longer than the average person but I was once in your shoes posting on BoS asking for uni and career advice. For what it's worth, WAM isn't everything except in a few very selective jobs. I'd focus more on getting everything else right (e.g. work exp/extra...

haven't moved into my new apartment yet- when i do, i'll get bigpond hooked up. hopefully can negotiate one of those deals through that TSA thing on Whirlpool or the Family and Friends package.

Test and compare your internet speed

I think if anything, living in the CBD makes it worse as there's that many more people using the same bandwidth (at least on ADSL2). I'm on the one exchange which services Pyrmont and Sydney and it's chockers- the only ISP willing to sign me up at the time was TPG. Telstra/Optus/iPrimus/iinet...

Test and compare your internet speed

I found out my new apartment in the CBD is already pre-wired for Bigpond Ultimate 100Mbps cable goodness :D Can't wait to get over this stupid 5Mbps rubbish. Can't believe people (like me) believe TPG's "over half our customers get 10Mbps or faster" BS which means half of them don't!

    What to major in! Accounting/Finance

Thinking back, I even bought "The complete idiot's guide to statistics" to help me get through as I had NFI what the lecturer was talking about half the time (he wrote on overheads and didn't use conventional slides!). Helped me later on in other subjects where they talked about the different...

    What to major in! Accounting/Finance

I actually found that accounting was dead boring in first year. It only got a lot more interesting once you did the more advanced courses which were less about book keeping and more about the modern issues with accounting and how businesses/companies/firms deal with it. If you're motivated now...

    What to major in! Accounting/Finance

Whilst everyone says that (even me), I actually found some of the more statistical side of finance/economics to be quite challenging. I didn't do that well in 3u but I consider myself to be above average at general maths/analysis (given I was in the Olympiad teams for my high school). If you...

What are the best extra curricular's/work experiences you guys havedone?

First off, don't get too bogged down in the mindset of "it must be relevant" because whilst it's true, it's surprisingly broad because the skills and behaviours you develop in a lot of roles can still be relevant (e.g. tutoring is similar to coaching/teaching which is what you do on the job...

    Cadetships 2013 thread

For both cadetships and internships you can drop out. Cadetships you can drop out within probation period with no penalty other than you having to repay your grant/debt that you'd already taken.

    Cadetships 2013 thread

That being said it can change year on year, based on firm needs and individual circumstances. Back in the day people started at the beginning of first year uni (i.e. right after finishing HSC), and then some firms moved it to July of first year, and then most firms now have it at the start of...

    Cadetships 2013 thread

Yes. One is ready to roll and work/coach/etc straight away whilst the other will be fresh without any idea what's going on.

    Cadetships 2013 thread

Info seminar. The larger firms will encourage you to apply through the standard means (i.e. websites) however some of the smaller firms might be more flexible and willing to take your CV if you really impress them (but don't try and shove it at them)... I personally would just go with an open...

They'd probably recommend you do a single degree before they offered a position.

    Cadetships 2013 thread

They will but I think you need to be willing to drop the other degree given the focus of a cadetship is usually to accelerate your career and get you to be a qualified CA asap.

    Cadetships 2013 thread

Cadetships are usually around the May-June period each year but just stay on top of it by looking at the ICAA website. Some firms open earlier but they all roughly do their final offers at the same time. At the very least, they will still be open when the ICAA evening is on so make sure you have...
