Various Commerce Degrees - Pros/Cons, Student Experiences

Am I the only one who missed where anyone claimed economics or commerce was a science?

    UBS Cadetship

I personally found the work/study balance get easier with time. After all, you're only doing 2 subjects a semester on a part time load. Just set rules for yourself (e.g. every Sunday I'll spend a solid 4 hours on this) and stick to it.

Various Commerce Degrees - Pros/Cons, Student Experiences

^ the challenge is having relevant ECs and showing how they make you more suitable for the job you're applying for.

    UBS Cadetship

Seems to be a trend. Can't tell if it's a spambot or just someone who... doesn't know what to say.

Tuxedo. To be honest I'm sure your formal suit will look fine as long as it's not some outrageous colour (white, bright colours, fluros, etc). Stick to blacks, browns, greys and navy.

That's what I wore but obviously make sure it's a suit and not a tux. Wear appropriate shirt and tie, as well as shoes.

I highly doubt the reliability of those numbers for various reasons but let's just say even if there are that many applications, how many of them are genuine vs. junk applications?

Various Commerce Degrees - Pros/Cons, Student Experiences

No doubt double degrees give you more options but it's definitely no guarantee of improved employability. If you know how to help a cow give birth and the guy next to you doesn't; does that make you any more employable to an accounting firm? (materially) You're better off focussing your time...

CA Program - Ask questions, get answers! (new and improved)

I personally think so because it gives you both an opportunity to meet people in the business to help give you a better idea of what you are signing up for/to expect, as well as the recruiters. Both of these are definite plusses later on in the process.

    UBS Cadetship

Congrats to all who got an interview but to those who didn't, seriously, it's just a cadetship. Not the end of the world. Most people join companies/organisations through graduate programs or internships. Cadetships are still a relatively niche thing and by no means is it an indicator or...

CA Program - Ask questions, get answers! (new and improved)

Never heard that line before- the info sessions are what they are. Given you are signing up for a 4 year program you'd want to at least have some idea of what you're committing to and that you've had a decent amount of information on which to base your decision. I personally found these to be a...

CA Program - Ask questions, get answers! (new and improved)

Correct. I personally found Masterclass worthwhile (and considerably better than Kaplan) when it came to getting summarised/easy to follow lecture slides (felt similar to uni) with relevant readings/appendices and some nice easy to use flowcharts/diagrams/extracts. That being said, it's not that...

    Commerce queries

Maybe for certain specific jobs but I can think of many who didn't have D wams and still got decent grad jobs. I've also seen in my firm at least that a D wam is definitely not required for most roles (to this day I can only think of one area which specified a D wam and that's no longer the case).

    Commerce queries

ps. Moved this thread to relevant spot (i.e. UNSW - ASB) LEGT1710 is mandatory if you wish to complete the CA program and hence a lot of people take it (along with the three other "Business law" major subjects- contract law, corporate entities and taxation law). These areas whilst not law law...

Various Commerce Degrees - Pros/Cons, Student Experiences

I did straight Commerce but used my spare time to work and get experience, as well as extra curricular activities and societies. Agreed. That's the exact message I tell everyone particularly those from selective high schools who feel compelled to make use of their ATAR and do law even if they...

    Finance Electives

ps. I think this is a great example of where in uni you learn the basics of something but then when you go to use something in practice, it's a) assumed you know what they're talking about; and b) you are building on top of that assumed knowledge with material which isn't able to really be...
