    Does God exist?

My 2 cents: My thoughts and beliefs are basically a combination of strong agnosticism and an agnostic atheism. What this means is that I personally do not believe in the existence of a deity in the most commonly used definition of the term, but I do not make any claims as to whether or not such...

    Quick questions.

Even rational powers they don't define that clearly from what I remember. Eg (-1)^{1/2} is the square root of -1. But there are two square roots of -1, which one do we take? Etc.

Raw Marks for First in course

Google it if you want some phrase to cling onto. My point is most holders of advanced degrees are just regular people who enjoy what they do enough to put in the necessary work. The word "genius" is thrown around far too often and devalues the hard work that most of these people have to put in...

Not sure what you mean by "the" usyd guy but he lectures/works there yes. Also there are lots of people with mathematics PhD's, most of whom are not geniuses.

    Sequences Question

This is why mechanically learning things is not as important as being able to spot patterns. Just look at the product expression for A_2k when you unravel using the recurrence relation and express it in terms of factorials. This sort of thing is done in some hsc questions.

    Career options with Maths?

Risk analyst is a completely different profession that happens to use mathematics and statistics. Using the word mathematician to describe a risk analyst is like using the word physicist to describe a mechanical engineer. Mathematician = researcher in mathematics (without further information).

All of which fall into the class of being a mathematician. For that matter you could say that there are no economists, physicists, chemists in the world.

    Cool Things.

Bitchin. Our first year ssp things were a bit boring, but we did a sweet one semester two second year...an introduction to analytic number theory. We each presented parts of the proofs of Dirichlet's theorem and the PNT.

    Cool Things.

Big +1. I find things like this much more beautiful than random analysis identities...because they are ideas that are universal. Simple and elegant.
