I'm quite fond of Sara Douglas and the Troy Game, but I really like Tracy Harding's 'The Ancient Future' trilogy. I mean, I wouldn't say it's the BEST, but I did enjoy them as far as sci-fi/fantasy novels go.

The Arkady Renko series by Martin Cruz Smith - About a disillusioned and determined Russian detective, full of vodka and Zaporozhets.

The Godfather series by Puzo/Winegardner - 'Nuff said, surprised no-ones mentioned these

The four Holmes novels and a few of the short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle DL - Classics, in every sense of the word

Trainspotting, The Acid House, Ecstasy, Filth and Porno by Irvine Welsh - Excellant phrase-book to learning the urban scot dialect

Has anyone heard of the alphabet series by Sue Grafton, i dont know of any other author who has set up a series like that. 'S is for Silence' was the last book out but i've only read up to 'E is for Evidence' so far.

For some reason S For Silence sounds familiar...though I haven't read it. Are they like mystery type thriller crime stories or something?

Tamora Peirce is an awesome author... her stories are a mix of Medieval with just the right dose of fantasy.

Dave Farland's Runelords series is very good.

The Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan.

Any Clive Cussler books... I have got hooked on his books for the thrill of the story and the adventure. He takes what is the most impossible situation and somehow everything turns out fine without being unbelievable. And you get attached to the characters in his novels. The Dirk Pitt books and Numa books in general and also the Corporation books more recently.

Star Wars books in general for me I love. Too many trilogies in there to name.

The Tomorrow Series and Ellie Chronicles by John Marsden.

clearly not enough of you people have read Lord of the Rings!!
Best all time.

However, is closely followed by:

Harry Potter
Tales of the Otori
the Farseer Trilogy
The Tawny Man Trilogy
Agatha Christies Hercule Poirot Novels (suppose they could be a series. MAybe not because they don't have an overall plot...)

and plenty more...
