Find locus of a complex number

Draw an argand diagram. Note the points 1 and -1, and draw z anywhere (for the time being), such that you do get an angle between 1) the line joining 1 and z 2) the line joining -1 and z around pi/3. Now if you drew z above the y axis, you'll see that arg(z-1)>arg(z+1) and that's bad because...

    Inequalities

If it's pretty obvious though, why not just say it... Just to be on the safe side :-)

    AMC? Mathematical Competition?

More than happy to try the coins question... If I knew what the question was :-P

    'vector spaces'

I'll msg laz about it... admins can only do threads, not forums :-)

Can someone please explain 'the director circle'

So, how did you know that pi^2/6 < 7/4? Can you prove that without a calculator? How about: sum of terms from 1/j^2 in the sequence < integral from (j-1) to infinity of x^(-2) dx (looking at the graph vs bar chart/Riemann sum of the terms) = 1/j-1 upon solving. Specifically letting j=3...

    epsilon-delta limit definition

Basically you need a sense of whether or not it exists. (you can sometimes do this a la yr 12 by subbing in the number involved and seeing if it works, or l'hopital's/dividing by highest power of x etc etc...) If doesn't exist: prove that. If it does exist: Have an idea of what it is by above...

I can't draw either... I sympathise with your situation

sigh... lets not try to get too elitist here..

Mathemics, I dont know what to do

I would agree with thekey. BUT go post on HSC marks forum to make sure... I think that it won't matter... (because, think of it the other way, your teacher could just "fudge" your mark 10% higher, and no one would know, so they need to make it fair even if someone does that..)

    yes I do :-) I stand corrected...

    UNSW school maths comp

computer-types are probably not allowed from memory... but the crazy thing is, one year they repeated a question, and someone just copied the proof out from a book... Fick's formula I think (the inside points/boundary points/area one).

spam kheir... btw it is a hard test. More on it later... when I am NOT supposed to be cramming :-P

He needs to vacate clancy as well :-P UNSW is the one where you can tell it's coming in a week.. because all the maths books in the library go mysteriously missing all at once...

    gah, integration

The long way: by partial fractions. Which isn't hugely long anyway... I'd suggest that. Unless you want to muck around with it, which is tricky...

    Advanced 3-Unit Questions

turtle and his pet coord bash, yes indeed.. :-P But I haven't done one of those for a while now... I think the main thing in conics is to be confident, as affinity said, that the problem is actually doable. That being said, keep an eye on the thing you're trying to prove, sometimes you might...

    Advanced 3-Unit Questions

Diagrams always help. If in need, coord bash like there's no tomorrow... and find nice simplifications..

    Limit problem

JM...:Yeah, 3 units... which isn't much, but it's better than nothing. Plus it keeps my brain ticking over... well, keypad, 1/2 a mark... don't worry yourself overly about it. Non-standard solutions are always tricky to mark anyway... but it's a bit of an art to figure out where others might...
