    Anomalous Remarks

You should always list your courses in order of preference. Put the course that you want to do most at the top of the list, irrespective of past cut-offs. I understand the desire to utilise as many of your UAI points as possible by prioritising the course with the highest cut-off, but a year...

    do i understand scaling?

I know statistics is covered in the general course, but I can't recall whether it's formally part of the 2U/3U syllabus. You can find some simple explanations via Google - e.g. here.

    Anomalous Remarks

If your mark is increased as a result of your principal's appeal, your UAI will be recalculated before main round offers are finalised. The fact that you were ranked first internally and that your assessment mark was reported as 49/50 means that at least one other student from your class...

Anyone getting their exam papers back from bos?

Deadline for rechecks is 9 January 2009. The only deadline for FOI applications is the period of time for which they retain your examination scripts. If they have them and you ask for them you [should] get them.
  5. Lazarus

    do i understand scaling?

It's linked to the combined English candidature - presumably because that candidature includes almost the entire cohort. See e.g. p17 of the 2007 report at [3.2.6].

Anyone getting their exam papers back from bos?

Yes, that should be fine. Reasons aren't necessary. You do need to make sure you have identified the specific documents to which you are requesting access. Include your student number.
  7. Lazarus

    do i understand scaling?

I can answer this relatively concisely, but explaining it might take a bit longer. The scaled standard deviation for a course is a measure of the spread of the standardised raw marks achieved by its candidature in all of their courses prior to scaling. Since 2002, there have been two types...

2004/05 einstein &/or 2004/05 scaling reports on aligned vs scaled

There's an updated version of SAM in the works which should satisfy that need. I've only had a brief look at the Einstein calculator - it seems to be an ordinary Excel spreadsheet, and my recollection is that there are many tools out there which can unprotect spreadsheets. You may find the...

Can someone PLEASE explain to me how I got such a low UAI?

I agree that this seems a bit suspicious. Even with very conservative estimates of your scaled marks, I calculated a UAI in the low 60s. I used the 2008 statistics. I'm currently working on a new version of SAM so I will investigate this further in a couple of days. Are you hoping for an...

Anyone getting their exam papers back from bos?

The $30 fee covers your whole application and you can request all of your papers within that application.

Raw score that equals band 5 or 6

Raw score that equals band 5 or 6

If, after taking the standard course, their performance on the common paper is as good as their performance would have been after taking the advanced course, then in my opinion the answer is yes. There's no 'dumbing down' involved. You still have to achieve the same result on the common paper...

Raw score that equals band 5 or 6

Not all of them do, obviously. In 2008 there were thousands of standard students who receive higher scaled marks than advanced students. The top 20% of the standard cohort, being approximately 6406 students, all received scaled marks equal to or greater than 6420 advanced students. The...

Raw score that equals band 5 or 6

I am not always right, and you can of course feel free to express an alternative view, but I thought my reasoning was relatively sound. :) My understanding is that the students who attend your school are, in general, more able than most and so there might not be any need or demand for English...

Raw score that equals band 5 or 6

Trebla is essentially correct. The raw band cut-offs for Standard and Advanced are almost exactly the same these days. The common area of study paper is used to adjust the marks of each course on the modules paper. Here's another way of looking at it. On the common paper: The Standard...

Preliminary Report on the Scaling of the 2008 HSC w/ tables

You're right, they're scaled the same - but advanced students are typically ranked above standard students, so they usually get the higher marks. The ESL course is scaled separately and ordinarily has below average scaling.

    Raw band cut-offs. (Updated: 15/09/04)

You can always ask. :) My understanding is that students are being given 'stock' answers denying their requests. I maintain that if the matter were to ever be heard properly in a court or tribunal that the marks would be released. This hasn't happened yet.

    Servers

Very good to know, I'll investigate - thanks. A fun idea, but the priority is actually getting things done, don't want to risk becoming distracted! There will definitely be periodic updates by either us or mods on our behalf. :)

    Servers

We never set out to build a scalable system, or any particular type of system at all. The site started as a few pages we threw together in our free time, with no real consideration given to growth, and over the years we have grafted more and more on to that poorly designed core. Now that we...

    Servers

Yes - we have survived so far by adding hardware to the servers ad hoc as the need has arisen, but it's become clear over the past year that we need completely new infrastructure. SAM was hammered yesterday and the servers just couldn't take it. We've already started recruiting a team to...
