Bring two calculators into the exam??

I remember last year in a Maths exam, my calculator stuffed up (luckily I hit it and the display came back), and ever since then I've used a new calculator. But I was just wondering. Do you think it's worthwhile bringing two calculators into the exam (especially the HSC exam) - better to be...

    Letter Arrangements - Vague Question.

I'll just type the question first: 1. Using all the letters, how many different arrangements can be made from the word MATHEMATICS? (worth 2 marks) My problem comes from the wording of the question. It says using all the letters. Does that mean, using every one of the 11 letters of the...

equation of the tangent to the parabola

ok cool - it worked. *for anyone who wants to use fractions instead a/b just type out the word &frac and then the two numbers (numerator first) then a semi-colon. i think it might only work for certain fractions

equation of the tangent to the parabola

&frac12; i wonder if that worked...?? can you use any html tags in these forums?? lets c: <font color="#FF0000">Test</font>

Shortcut for cot@ on a calculator

i reckon they should put a trig mode in the calculator. with all the shortcuts for cot/cosec/sec etc. it'd be much faster IMO, than putting in tan@, then the 1/x button. btw. why is that putting in tan2x in a calc, you get a math error? coz everytime u want to do tan2x...

    stupid question

GPS?? BTW. Are you seriously studying for your PhD?? And if you are, then let me guess - pure mathematics?? Ever thought of going to Harvard or Stanford......???

    sin3@ - State or Prove?

ok... i'll probably derive it first to be on the safe side - i'd have to agree with george w. now that i think about it. they often ask u to expand it in the first part first beofre applying it in the second part.

    1991/1996 Q7 Easy - How about 1990?

I was looking at the 1990 HSC exam (Q7), and I surprised myself by pulling most of it out. How would you rate the difficulty of 1990 Q7? According to stats, the paper as a whole was difficult (dunno about Q7 alone though). IMO, if I could do it, it mustn't have been very hard by standards...

    49/50 - Scaled or Aligned?

I often hear people say they got 49/50 or 99/100 for some subjects. Is this mark an aligned mark or a scaled mark?

    Relative Differences - Aligning Marks

Just for interest.... When the BOS aligns the mark and "takes into account the relative differences in marks between students", are they comparing the students' internal assessment marks out of 100 (after all the weightings have been taken care of), or the difference in marks on each individual...

Shortcut for cot@ on a calculator

Doing 3D Trig, it's a pain to keep doing (1/tan@)2 etc. Is there any shortcut for cot@?? It'd be nice if there was :)

    sin3@ - State or Prove?

If there's a trig. proof in an Ext 1 exam involving sin/cos/tan3@, do you have to expand it to get full marks? or can you just state the result? since the triple angle formulae aren't explicitly on the Ext 1 syllabus (or are they?), would u have to expand them??

    stupid question

SCEGS - Sydney Church of England Grammar School?? A guess, I'm assuming that was a boys' school - as opposed to SCEGGS - but then again, why didn't they make it SCEBGS??

    Harder Applications of 3U Topics

lol....well i take that as a no then. btw. im in yr11, but doing hsc maths this year (so id only be going about 9 months ahead) i did one part of one question in excel ext 2 maths (in the harder 3u section). and u'll be glad to know that i got 3/120 in last year's ext 2 hsc exam paper. :)

If you can only do the 2nd part...??

If there was a question in which (i) required a proof and (ii) required an application of the proof, can you get full marks for (ii) without having first done (i): e.g. (i) Prove cos2A = 1 - 2sin2A (ii) Hence, find the indefinite integral of cos2A. I know that's a stupid...

    Harder Applications of 3U Topics

Is it worthwhile doing the harder 3U questions from 4U textbooks, in preparation for the 3U test (this year I'm not doing 4U...dunno if I will next year though). Could doing the questions out of the 4U Fitpatrick book on Harder 3U topics be good prep. for Q7 in 3U??

    fitzpatrick q's

Q1: 8x3-6x+1 = 0 Substituting x=cos@: 8cos3@-6cos@ = -1 .'. cos@(4cos2@-3) = -1/2 (divide through by 2 and factorise) The LHS is the factorised form of expanded and factorised form of cos3@. I'll leave it up to CM_Tutor, Affinity or Grey Council etc. to...

    stupid question

How did u know that??? BTW. It's Pious without the 'o'. But, again, how did u know that? *Unless you looked up a website or telephone book* Anyone know what AXGTHS is??? If anyone gets that one, I'll give them $20.

    Odd & Even Functions

is it a rule that i should have knwon off-hand, because it's not in any textbooks that i can find, and my teacher never told the class. btw, with that question, to get full marks, would u have to go through CM_Tutor's proof, or could you just state the rule and go from there?
