    Derivative of an absolute value?

    lol. :) ok, i see now. and if you had, for example d/dx |x2 - 1|: there'd be two solutions?? 1. -2x 2. 2x ??

How do people find Inverse Functions??

Just on that, how do you restrict the domain without drawing the function first? Can you test for f'(x)>0 and/or f'(x)<0?? The basic inverse trig. functions are fairly simply to sketch. It's some of the other ones that I find more difficult to get my head around: E.g...

How do people find Inverse Functions??

Easy? Average? Hard? So far, I'm finding inverse functions are giving me a little bit of trouble. Mainly the sketching of inverse trig. functions and finding the domain of some of them. Anyone got any tips for "inverse functions"? I could do with a few pointers.

    Derivative of an absolute value?

yep, exactly right. ex 26(c) - can't remember the question though. anyone else also doing this exercise at the moment?

    Arrangement in a circle....

where are cm_tutor and affinity when u need them??? :) 1. pet hate is perms & combs. lol - however, i kind if like the challenge and getting the answer out in the end. i just hope somebody can solve this one, coz it's pretty interesting and i'd really like to know the answer. *i'm still...

    Arrangement in a circle....

hhhmm..... still confused. *why does the answer give a no. of arrangements <1?* it doesn't make sense. so how do u take into consideration that the two women sitting next to each other can be sitting in any position? is my working OK apart from that fact?

    Arrangement in a circle....

I came across this question in Cambridge 3U Maths Yr 12 - it was the first question of the "Extension" section of one of the exercises. Q: A group of n men and n+1 women sit around a circular table. How many arrangements are possible if no two men are to sit next to one another? A...

    Equating coefficients?

This might sound stupid, but what does "equating coefficients" actually mean? I came across it with the auxiliary angle method.

    TriG QueStiOn..

i have to agree with heinz. it's an easy 3 marks? so why not do it? use: cos2x = 1 - 2sin2x then rearrange that to get sin2x = ???

    Odd QueStiOn..

lol.....just realised heinz already it. :)

    Odd QueStiOn..

i did it on paper.....and i got an answer of pi2/4 which is approx. equal to 2.467u3 can somebody verify my answer?

    Odd QueStiOn..

i've often done questions asking for approximations for volumes using simson's or trapezoidal. all u have to do is approximate the integral using simpson's and multiply it by pi and then that's ur approximate for the volume. i think they do it in maths in focus in the challenge exercises.

    whose finished syllabus?

hhhmmm. so i'm guessing u complete the whole 2U course before u go onto 3U??? if that's the case, then no wonder u have already finished? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - just on that: do you guys do 2U then 3U, or do you go topic by topic e.g. 2U physical apps + 3U physical apps in one go, or do...

i wouldn't go so far as obsession..... but i'd just like to know.....maybe it's just the pressure from having hsc maths this year working on my subconscious - telling me to persist with my quest to find out what other people's papers are like. :)

    Post Ext 1 Papers/Marks/Ranks

the Q4 that i posted (parts a and b) were worth 12 marks altogether. exam totalled to 50 marks. and we had 60 minutes to do it in. surprisingly though, the 2 guys who got 49/50 for 3U last year in the HSC (now doing 4U and repeating 3U), got 44/50 and 46/50 for that exam (i think - might have...
