Is it true that UTS business school is absolutely crap?

I personally prefer these as opposed to a higher base since a higher base just means you get taxed more and it rewards people who don't necessarily perform better. But then I'd also reconsider social budgets being reallocated to higher staff salaries!

    What is investment banking?

Indeed. It has been a while. Just for the benefit of others reading this, no I do not work in IB. I do work hectic hours in big 4 accounting but it's what I'm good at and enjoy. That being said, the pay isn't as bad as others make it out to be but until you get to Partner, you wouldn't exactly...

Working in Hong Kong in the future?

I wonder how many people here have sat in on a graduate or post-graduate interview for an international job before... but anyway, I'd say canto is socially expected unless you don't look Asian.

CA Program - Ask questions, get answers! (new and improved)

A couple of people I know went to LBS and said it was quite good so I considered that, but at this stage, will probably hold off. Another friend of mine from work is doing Masters of Applied Finance (and some other peeps are doing CFA) but then I am trying to determine what would actually be...

Is it true that UTS business school is absolutely crap?

At best you get time off in lieu (or equivalent) and discretionary bonuses. And gift cards (not that I mind these since they're tax free).

    UNSW Bcomm or BComm/ECO??????

Yes but for some reason I found grasping the concepts of debits/credits and the accounting cycle really challenging when I was in first sem, first year uni. Nevertheless I got it in the end but that was only from working in practice than uni.

    What is investment banking?

Given that there is yet another onslaught of people saying they want to work in IB, I may as well bump this thread.

BIG 4 CADETSHIP for investment banking/ RBA intern?

Wait a sec, I think it's worth clarifying and confirming that being in FS audit by no means or stretch of imagination will guarantee you an IB internship. This is definitely the exception and not the rule. In other words, it may help give you an advantage over another candidate applying for the...

What car will you get as your first car?

Guess not but presumably it'll be similar to C200 Kompressor/CGI where it's easy to get the exemption. I'd say the likes of Kia Rio, VW Polo, Mazda2, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Getz, Holden Cruze, etc... aren't too bad nowadays. As long as you aren't scraping the bottom of the barrel of new cars...

    Comm subject selection dilemma

ECON1102 isn't too hard especially if you did economics in high school. It's a first year subject. FINS2624 is a bitch relative to ECON1102 and requires you to really read and pay attention to exercises/activities. Henry Yip has a habit of writing painfully hard exams and testing very obscure...

    BIT or Comp Sci?

Logical question is what do you plan to do career wise? I have a few friends doing BIT now, and from what I can tell, it sounds a lot more employable in the 'real world' with the softer skills other than hardcore computer science grads.

Out of these two "qualifications" which is more highly likelly to INVESTMENT BANKING.

Re: Out of these two "qualifications" which is more highly likelly to INVESTMENT BANK Interesting point, but I'd say given what has happened, a lot of organisations would rather brand themselves as a retail bank than an investment bank.

What car will you get as your first car?

People who buy the mini cooper do so for an emotional reason rather than anything rational. If you find that you have that connection with it, then I'd go for that (assuming you find one in perfect condition which you really like). At least it's a fun car to drive. The 318i, whilst practical and...

    Is IPT hard?

I'd say the challenge is that it's easy to pass/get decent marks in, but if you are aiming for the top of band six, then it's quite challenging. Part of the problem is each school typically has a very small number of students doing the course which means those who end up sticking it out all the...

    course selection!!! LEGT2741(entity) and LEGT2751(taxation)

From memory you can do taxation before doing entities as in both cases, the prerequisite subject is LEGT1710. Refer to UNSW Handbook: http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/courses/2012/LEGT2751.html I personally found both 2741 and 2751 challenging but extremely interesting. I ended up...

BIG 4 CADETSHIP for investment banking/ RBA intern?

That being said if you can't balance full time work on an accounting cadetship with uni, you are going to find working full time in a high pressure industry even tougher especially if you undertake CFA/etc. In your first 6 months, probably not, but it will make a difference because FS is...

BIG 4 CADETSHIP for investment banking/ RBA intern?

    1. Typically you undertake internships in penultimate year and by then you typically would have finished your cadetship. 2. If you were successful in getting an internship, then clearly that is where your passion lies and I'd consider either taking leave of absence or resigning from the...

Working in Hong Kong in the future?

I think the OP has got his priorities/thought process around the wrong way. Key questions are what is his intended career path (e.g. accounting, law, finance, etc), and why does he want to work in HK. How important is it to work in HK (i.e. is it a nice to have, or something which you must have...
